I've got a bunch of frequent flier miles sitting around, and I'm thinking that January/February might be a good time for me to get back out into the world... I don't have a job and I'm just finishing up applications to grad school. I just finished undergrad.

I've been to: Iceland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, and the Netherlands.

I am considering going back to Europe or going to Central America. I am, at this exact moment, without real plans of any sort.

If fly to Europe, I would like to visit places that are quite different from the places that I've been. I am considering Spain, Portugal, and Morocco; or Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey.

If I go to Central America, I would plan to travel from Belize to Costa Rica (through Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua), or maybe all the way to Panama. For the same number of points, I can also fly into Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, or Columbia. I am open to South American suggestions. I haven't got the points to fly into the other countries in SA unless I wait until March.

I am a female traveling alone, so I prefer to be in places where there are other solo travelers that are considered "safe" for single women. Because of this, Europe and Southeast Asia are appealing to me, but I don't have enough points to travel to most of Asia. I have almost enough points to go to Japan, Korea, or Mongolia, so if anyone has strong feelings about these places... Share! I never really hear about solo travel in Central America and I can't really find hostels with shared rooms.

ANY ideas would be great, places I've mentioned, places I haven't... The cheaper the places, the better. I would be traveling between two and six weeks depending on the cost of hostels, food, etc... Like I said, this is a sudden idea I've had so I'm pretty open. Suggestions, etc.... fire away!

Thanks!

Statistics are here!

You can now see the number of people who have visited your journal, your individual entries, a chart of comments, readers of the RSS feed of your journal, and the last 100 logged-in users who have visited your journal directly (if you've enabled My Guests).

Things you should know:
-Stats are completely anonymous (only My Guests is tied to username); only numbers are recorded, not any other information
-The times and dates in the graph are based on server time, which is UTC/GMT
-The light grey number at the top left corner of the graph is the statistical outlier
-While the graph may go back in time to this summer, the stats-gathering server was not on constantly, so previous stats may be missing. Today, and going forward, full stats are collected and displayed.
-If you opt out of My Guests (meaning that your username will not show up on other people's reports and you will not be able to view your My Guests tab), it does not affect your use of the rest of the Stats - if you're a Paid or Permanent user, you'll still be able to see all the rest of the information on this feature

If you have a Paid or Permanent account, you can now send 10 of your non-Paid friends a $10 coupon. Your friend will be able to purchase a Paid Account for $9.95 (instead of $19.95) for one year by enrolling in our automatic payment plan or make a manual payment of $15 (instead of $25).

  • All Paid and Permanent accounts can send out the coupons by clicking here (it's also under Friends -> Holiday promotion in the site header)
  • You can also send to people not on your Friends list by manually entering the username in the field provided
  • If your friend declines the invitation, it will be returned to your available invitation pool and you'll be able to send to someone else
  • You can send the invitations until January 15th

OK, a couple big things happened last week, not least of which was a hard drive crash on my laptop.

Between that and the blizzard that hit the midwest, it essentially wiped out another work week.

Fortunately, it seems (fingers crossed) as if all of my data was backed up. But getting everything back on the machine’s new hard drive has been a bit – shall we say “entertaining.” Not least because the new hard drive came loaded with a new operating system, and many of my old discs re still in boxes somewhere from the move.

I *hope* to have new strips up and running by this coming Friday, Dec. 18, Monday, December 21 at the latest.

On the plus side, there’ll be some news about something that’ll soon make sure DorkTower.com web site problems, etc., etc., are – if not a thing of the past – at least far more infrequent. There’ll be other big news as well. I’ll probably pst that this coming Thursday.

For the moment, it’s been incredibly frustrating, and I’d like to apologize for the ups and downs (mostly downs) of the web site this month. In 2010, I hope that the thrice-weekly schedule of comic strips will be hit, and hit regularly and well.

On the other hand, I’m not a kid in Darfur, so I really can’t complain too much about anything…

Also at the start of the year, some more big news, about what’s going on with everything: the Dork Tower comic strips; Dr. Blink comics and more; the Dork Tower comic books; My Little Cthulhu; Mythos Buddies; Munchkin; Out of the Box Games; the Dork Tower puppet project; where my mind’s at; and so on. Kind of a State of the Cartoonist address. I’m working that up now to post New Year’s Day. It ma need to be broken into a few parts.

In the meantime, thank you SO much for your patience these last few weeks. Please check back in lter in the week, when I hope things will be starting to run a bit more smoothly. I’m working on making everything sharper, smoother, faster and better at DorkTower.com.

John

PS – please excuse any typos. I’ve got to run off for a plane, and don’t have time to proof this in my usual haphazard way…

John

Hey, I've been meaning to do a Jon Stewart/Daily Show related icon but only now do I have enough icon space for one. But there are SO MANY moments on the Daily Show that are icon-worthy, and so, may I humble request icons of:
-Jon tilting his head to tongue the picture of the grandma in the wheelchair on Dec. 9th 2009 episode
-Jon about to lick the turtle
-Jon with the black-bar censor glasses
-Jon *almost* saying 'cock' on Dec. 9th 2009 episode

I'm sorry if I don't know the date of the episodes or even the name of the segment.

I'm going to Israel. I bought this, hoping I can charge my camera battery while over there.

I've opened it, but don't get where I'm supposed to plug anything into? Like, where do the prongs to my charger go? Anyway have experience with these types of things?
